Referendum Information

The Monona Grove School Board has unanimously approved an operational funding question on the April 4 ballot. Across the country, here in Dane County and in Monona Grove, public education is facing an increasingly urgent fiscal crisis. In the last two years, schools have received no increase in per pupil revenue from the state of Wisconsin, which is a primary driver for budget shortfalls in districts across the state. Rapidly increasing operational costs and the expiration of one-time federal COVID money are also key factors.

We encourage our community to make an informed decision on April 4. This page provides information and FAQs, as well as a calendar of events where you can learn more, provide feedback and ask questions.

Graph showing actual and projected tax on a $300,000 home. The school tax portion of the total property tax bill has been going down for the last three years, and our projections show that if the referendum passes, by year 3 (2025-26), the school portion of property tax bills will be less than they were in 2020-21 as shown in this graph.

Projecting tax impact is complicated since these numbers may change based on new commercial and residential developments, state funding, etc. The tax impact of the referendum funds is not necessarily the amount of increase in your property tax bill.

The school tax portion of the total property tax bill has been going down for the last three years, and our projections show that if the referendum passes, by year 3 (2025-26), the school portion of property tax bills will be less than they were in 2020-21 as shown in this graph.

Estimated Tax Impact Over Current Rates Chart

On a home with a fair market value of $300,000, this is $615 / year 1, an additional $156 in year 2 (on top of the new base), an additional $231 in year 3 (on top of the new base). It remains stable at $1002 per year thereafter. Tax impact does not necessarily mean the same thing as tax increase. As shown in the chart above, the school tax portion of your property tax bill is projected to be less in 2025 than it was in 2020-2021.
