The Board of Education (School Board) are the governing body of the budget and finances for the Monona Grove School District.
Background
On October 11, 2023, the Monona Grove School District Board of Education approved the Teaching, Learning, and Equity Committee and Administration’s recommendation to implement the 4K–2 Grade Configuration Proposal for Cottage Grove School and Taylor Prairie School, beginning in the 2025–2026 school year.
However, at the December 11, 2024 Board meeting, the Board unanimously voted to pause the implementation due to emerging factors, including budget constraints and updated enrollment projections. At that time the Board directed administration to to review enrollment projections and capacity and recommend a plan. Cottage Grove and Taylor Prairie schools are operating below capacity, resulting in duplicated positions and services that reduce overall efficiency. Updated building capacity data and five-year enrollment projections confirm that all Taylor Prairie and Cottage Grove students can be accommodated within the Cottage Grove School building for the next five years at minimum. One historical barrier to consolidation has been traffic; in response, a traffic reduction analysis has been completed, and the findings indicate that traffic concerns can be addressed effectively. On December 16, 2025, the School Board voted unanimously to consolidate Taylor Prairie School and Cottage Grove School (at the Cottage Grove School site) beginning in the 2026-27 school year.
Furthermore, the district is currently facing multiple facilities and capacity challenges that require strategic planning. Over the next ten years, the district anticipates approximately $35 million in capital projects (see materials below), yet a long-range facilities budget has not been established.
Two sites for consideration are Maywood and Nichols School site (District Office/MG21). Maywood School is underutilized, partially leased to the City, and requires significant capital investment that exceeds its remaining useful life as a school building. The Nichols site also requires roughly $3 million in capital improvements, though it occupies a prime location that could be leveraged strategically for both operational and financial benefit.
Therefore, administration recommended engaging a licensed real estate broker to gather information on the fair market value and potential sale of the Maywood School site, Nichols School site, and to engage in the financial and operational planning necessary to relocate District Office staff and the MG21 Charter School to the Taylor Prairie School site and to bring findings and recommendations to the Board for review. The School Board approved these resolutions.
These recommendations aim to optimize facility utilization, align resources with projected enrollment trends, and ensure sustainability while maintaining flexibility for future growth.
