The Monona Grove School District is dedicated to the educational growth of ELL/Bilingual and minority students. Part of this dedication includes high school and middle school counselors creating awareness for students of college preparation.
The District Bilingual Resource Specialist, Evelyn Sandoval also helps students learn about pre-college programs. Evelyn helps Spanish speaking families in our district to understand the importance of continuing their children's education after graduating from high school. To further promote continuing education, the district has applied for DPI (Department of Public Instruction) scholarships for pre-college programs. During the summer of 2010, the Monona Grove School District won scholarships that enabled 4 students to attend a total of 6 pre-college programs.
The district is hopeful 10-15 students will be able to attend the pre-college programs that are available the summer of 2011. Families interested in these programs should contact Evelyn Walker at 209-5530.
Evelyn welcomes the opportunity to work with bilingual and minority families. She will address cultural and social barriers that may deter students from college and make personal visits with parents to explain the pre-college program.
Requirements for students who want to attend a pre-college program with a scholarship:
* Low income
* Open to everyone but preferably to minorities
* Students who are in the grades 8th-12th during the 2010-2011 school year.
The deadline to turn in applications to Evelyn Walker is Monday, May 30, 2011
