The Wetlands at our School Forest were created by using a mining shovel to dig a four foot deep pond back in the 1960's. This pond was dug in a triangular shape. The mud that was excavated was put below the large drumlin hill and spread out. The pond has gone through many natural changes over the years. One such change has been the natural progression of a pond going from a more open water area to being filled in by cattails. Due to the fact that this pond is so shallow, it is very easy for large amounts of cattail to establish and take hold. At one point in the fall of 1995 the cattail population was diminished as part of an eagle scout project. Unfortunately the cattails returned with a vengeance. Recently, as part of two Winnequah Middle School expeditions, (one in eighth grade and one in sixth grade) an open area of water has been reestablished.
