Learning Expeditions
Over 25 learning expeditions will take place at Winnequah
during the 2007-08 school year. Winnequah's innovative practices in this
area have drawn educators from as far away as Puerto Rico and Alaska.

Students visit the Milwaukee Indian Summer Festival
before studying the traditions of several Native American nations, making
crafts and food, and then sharing their knowledge and products with

Winnequah Middle School is located in Monona, WI and has a
student population of approximately 700 students in grades six through eight. It
serves the communities of Cottage Grove and Monona. The school is located next to
Winnequah Park which is accentuated by beautiful lagoons and rolling grounds bordered
with trees. The community swimming pool, public library, community building, and city
office building are all located within a three minute walk of the school.
In 1999, Winnequah received a major, three year, grant
enabling it to join the network of demonstration schools based on the philosophy of
Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound (ELOB for short) which emphasizes experiential
learning and involvement of students and staff members in their communities while meeting
state educational standards. Due to the success of this program, it
continues on during the 2007-08 school year.
More information and documentation about this exciting
approach to learning can be found by visiting Expeditionary Learning Outward
Bound's web site.
