The Lagoons Expedition is being conducted periodically
throughout the 2003-04 school year. This expedition started in mid-September
with a walk and picnic at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center in Monona. During this
visit, they also listened to presenations about the Reserve's eco-system.
While studying lagoons, students learn about the environment and keep a journal
tracking their reflections on the activities carried out during the expedition.
Guiding Questions

1. What does a healthy lagoon look like?
2. What affect do humans have on the lagoon?
3. Why should we care about the lagoon?
During field experiences, students worked at the Aldo Leopold Nature
Center, Winnequah Park Lagoons, and Lake Monona. Activities included water
testing, comparing the water quality between the lagoons at Aldo Leopold and
Winnequah Park. Possible community service projects students will be
involved in during the spring may include cleaning the lagoons, planting native
vegetation, and public service announcements regarding the importance of lagoons
as a natural resource for the communities of Monona and Madison.
