Winnequah Middle school students in Mrs. Bailey’s and Mrs. Kerper’s 6th grade classes have been busy in mini-expeditions. We honored Black History Month by reading a book called "Slave Dancer", creating a map, learning about African geography and culture, creating a biography on African Americans, making a stamp or a coin, and presenting our products. Our Greek expedition was fun. We made monsters to go with the explanation myths we wrote. We shared our myths and monsters with the class. We read many Greek myths while learning Ancient Greek history. We read myths like “The Face in the Pool” about Narcissus, who loved himself, and Echo, a nymph who loved him, and “The Golden Touch” that explains the warns of us being greedy. The myths helped explain to the Greeks how the world works. We studied the origin of the Democratic form of government, the culture, geography, art and music of ancient Greece. We also learned about the origin of the Olympics while we watched the 2002 World Olympics held in Utah. We picked our favorite sport and watched and reported on the progress of that sport and its athletes. Our 6th grade band and orchestra were the opening act when we saw Lloyd Bacherach, a Para Olympian. He showed us how he overcame many obstacles in life by being around “dream makers”, positive people who made him feel confident and good about him self. He taught us that even though things may be hard and some people may not believe in you, you should never give up. The secret is to trust in your self, be around positive people, laugh a lot, and have good self-esteem. |
