Introduction:

Rationale: Having a long-range plan in place for the district library media program will provide a concrete framework for a comprehensive library media program, supporting student learning.

School and Community Demographics: The Monona Grove School District serves approximately 2700 students at six sites. There are two Pre K-2 buildings, two 3-5 Elementary buildings, a Middle School, and a High School. The District draws students from the communities of Cottage Grove and Monona. The population of the City of Monona is approximately 8000. The population of Cottage Grove is approximately 4100.

Overview of Planning Process: In preparation for development of the long-range plan, the library media specialists identified their top priorities for the improvement of the District Library Media program. They gathered examples of long-range plans from a variety of library programs. DPI guidelines also provided structure for the content of long-range plans for the school library. The media specialists have consulted with teachers in each building to determine the areas in which improvement is needed.

The librarians reviewed the materials compiled to support the development of the Long-Range Plan. They have collected ideas from professional publications and collegial networks to determine best practice. Suggestions and comments have been and will continue to be solicited from a variety of educational stakeholders including: administrators, faculty and students.
