General Tips for Reading Aloud with Your Child
&
Select a wide variety of books
and magazines that both of you will enjoy (include fiction, folk tales, poetry,
non-fiction, historical fiction, mysteries, etc.)
&
Continue to read to or with your
child, even if they are very independent readers
&
Spend a few minutes after
reading for a relaxed discussion – not a quiz – on what was just read
&
Encourage your child’s
participation – joining in on repeated phrases, making comments, asking
questions, predicting what will happen next, or reading parts of the book
&
Find an appropriate pace –
don’t read too fast or too slow; adjust your pace to the book and your child
