MGSD 9-12 Summer School

Greetings!  It’s hard to believe we’re entering the fourth quarter and that thoughts of summer are already starting to creep into our minds.  But it’s true—summer will be here before we know it!

With that realization, we might also be wondering about summer school.  Consider this a beginning information source for you regarding summer school.  More information will be available in the notification letters—sent out throughout the next several weeks—inviting you to register your child.

If you do have questions after reading through the following information, please do not hesitate to contact the 6-12 summer school coordinator, Jeremy Kautza.  He can be reached via email at: Jeremy_Kautza@mononagrove.org, or via phone at 608-221-7666 (ext. 6621).  There is also a summer school information line.  It is 608-221-7666 (ext. 3621).  Answers to common questions can be found here.

Participation: The program for students in grades 9-12 emphasizes providing additional academic support for students.  The only enrichment programs courses are the track and weightlifting programs.  Students must be recommended for participation in one of the four areas below in order for them to enroll.  Parents of students that are recommended for Summer School will be informed in a letter sent in May.

Courses: More specific information is available in the MGHS 2008 Summer School Course Information grid found elsewhere in this newsletter.  The four general areas in which classes will be offered include:

Math: Algebra 1 and Geometry.  Each course will provide curriculum equivalent to ½ of the year-long course.  As such, students will be able to earn ½ credit in either of these areas.  All students who failed one semester of either course are encouraged to register once they receive their recommendation letter.  Students who failed both semesters of either course may NOT register for summer school to “make-up” ½ of a credit.  They MUST re-enroll in the course during the full academic year.

Science: Integrated Physical Science and Integrated Life Science.  Each course will provide curriculum equivalent to ½ of the year-long course.  As such, students will be able to earn ½ credit in either of these areas.  All students who failed one part of either course are encouraged to register once they receive their recommendation letter.  Students who failed both semesters of either course may NOT register for summer school to “make-up” ½ of a credit.  They MUST re-enroll in the course during the full academic year.

English: English A and English B.  Each course will provide relevant curriculum, based on student need, equivalent to one semester of HS English.  As such, students will be able to earn ½ credit of English by taking either course.  Any student who failed any part of any English course are encouraged to register for English A or B once they receive their recommendation letter.  Students who failed more than one semester of HS English are encouraged to register for both English A and B, if their schedule allows, allowing them to potentially earn 1 full credit of HS English.  Students cannot repeat either course once credit is earned in that respective course.

History: American History A and American History B; World History A and World History B; Government.  Each course will provide relevant curriculum in the form of “pass packets” equivalent to one semester of either USS 9, USS 10, USS 11, or Government.  Your recommendation letter (will arrive in May) will indicate which class your son/daughter should register for.  When registering note that section 1 designates a morning class, while section 2 designates an afternoon class.  Students may take American History A and American History B each only once.  Students who must register for Government will NOT be allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies.

Dates: Weekdays, Monday, June 16th through Friday, July 11th (no class Friday, July 4th).

Times: Summer school courses are scheduled for one of two time periods.  Morning classes run from 8:30-11:45.  Afternoon classes run from 12:45-4:00.  The weightlifting and track programs run on their own schedules.  Students MUST be on time to their classes!  This will be STRICTLY enforced!  Tardies will be treated as absences.  Accumulating three or more absences during summer school will result in removal.

Site: All MGHS summer school courses will be held on the second floor of MGHS.  Specific room locations will accompany your registration confirmation email.

Transportation: Bussing will be provided to students in Cottage Grove.  Students registered for morning classes only will be picked up at Cottage Grove Elementary at approximately 8:00am.  Students registered for afternoon classes only will be picked up at Cottage Grove Elementary at approximately 12:15pm.  Busses will also provide return transportation arriving at Cottage Grove Elementary school at approximately 12:10pm and 4:25pm.

Registration: ALL registration will be done online.  More information on how to register can be found elsewhere in this newsletter, or by going to http://www.mononagrove.org/ and clicking on “Summer School Registration” in the Resources section.  Registration opens at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, and closes on Wednesday, June 11 at Noon.  You are strongly encouraged to register your son/daughter AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.
