MGSD 6-8 Summer School

Summer School 2008

Grades 6-8

It is hard to believe that summer is just around the corner.  As we near the end of the third quarter many parents have questions about Summer School.  The following information answers some of the most common questions.

Participation:  The program for students in grades 6-8 emphasizes providing additional academic support for students.  The only enrichment courses offered are the track and weightlifting programs.  Students must be recommended for participation in one of the 3 courses below in order for them to enroll.  Parents of students that are recommended for Summer School will be informed in a letter sent in May.

Courses:  The courses offered this year are:

1.        Math for Success: Reinforcement of math concepts, such as basic computation skills.  Students are recommended for this course based on their Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) scores as well as their classroom performance.

2.       Reading for Success:  Reinforcement of reading skills such as fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and writing.  Students are recommended for this course based on their Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) scores as well as their classroom performance.

3.       PASS:  Reinforcement of skill areas addressed throughout the year in the subjects of English, Math, Science, and/or Social Studies.  This course is only for students with a cumulative core grade point average below 1.7 (C-).  Successful completion of the coursework is required for promotion to the next grade level.
