COTTAGE GROVE SCHOOL
 Policies and Procedures

STUDENT RESIDENCY
The Monona Grove School District Board Policy 501.5 states:  “No student shall be permitted to attend school until he/she is actually living in the school district.”  The law requires us to charge tuition for students who attend the Monona Grove School District if permanent residency has not been established.  Permanent is defined as seven day a week.  The District may request a copy of an official court document verifying a joint custody arrangement with one parent residing in Cottage Grove.  An exception to this policy is the State law permitting children to attend school outside their school district of residence submitted during February of each year.

SCHOOL HOURS
The first bell rings at 8:00 a.m. and classes begin at  8:05 a.m.  Children should not arrive before 7:40 a.m.   Students who arrive after 8:05 a.m. must check in at the school office before going to class.  Please call the attendance line at 839-4576, then press "1" to leave a message if your child is going to be tardy or absent.  Morning recess is from 9:55 a.m. until 10:10 a.m.  The school office is open Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  Please call or come to the office if you have questions or concerns.

MONONA GROVE BUS TRANSPORTATION
Safe transportation of school children is a joint responsibility.  Bus owners, drivers, school authorities, students, and parents must all cooperate in order to assure safe, comfortable transportation.  Parents/guardians and children must realize that school bus transportation is a ”privilege” not a “right”.  Pupils who misbehave may be denied the privilege of riding on the bus since their misbehavior jeopardizes the safety of the entire busload and could result in injury to others.

HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION
Paw Prints, our school newsletter is sent home the first Friday of the month.  It contains news of school happenings, upcoming events, and important dates.

Progress reports are designed to provide a clear reflection of how students are performing in school.  They are provided at the end of each trimester.

The school office is open Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  Please call or come to the office if you have questions or concerns.

FEES
The Monona Grove School District elementary student fee is $43.00.  This fee is used to assist in covering the cost of consumable supplies, textbooks, workbooks, and a yearbook.  Fees are collected at Registration in August.  Assignment notebooks cost an additional $3.00 and we encourage all students to purchase one.  There may be additional fees for field trips during the school year.

If any fee causes a hardship for your family, please make us aware so we can assist.

BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND MORNING MILK
Our food service staff prepares school lunch and breakfast for interested students and parents/guardians.  Our school meals provide the proper balance of nutrients and calories.  The food service staff also caters classroom pizza parties and provides “Grab-N-Go” lunches for field trips.  Birthday treats can also be ordered in advance through food service.  Fourth and fifth grade students also have the choice of a garden salad or a chef's salad which must be ordered at the beginning of the school day.  A link to the current menus can be found on our home page.

Meals are paid through an automated debit accounting system.  Parents/guardians deposit money into their child’s account and when the child eats a school meal the amount is deducted from their account.  We invite you to join your child for school breakfast or school lunch.  Just call the school office to reserve your meal.

For the 2006 - 2007 school year, student breakfasts will cost $1.15 and lunches will cost $1.75.  The cost for adults is $1.30 for breakfast and $2.90 for lunch.

Morning Milk is delivered to each classroom for break time.  Students can chose from whole white, 2%, skim, or chocolate (skim) milk.  Morning milk costs $20.00 per trimester or $60.00 for the entire school year.  The first trimester or entire school year payment is due at Registration. Order forms will be sent home for the second and third trimesters and payment will be due before the first day of the trimester.

Free and reduced cost meals are available through the National School Lunch Program to students whose families meet eligibility criteria.  Applications should be submitted as early as possible.  Our “Milk Buddies” program helps cover the cost of morning milk to students who qualify for the program.

HEALTH AND MEDICATION AT SCHOOL
All medications must be furnished in the original packaging or prescription bottle.  Prescription medications require written instructions from the prescribing physician.

Wisconsin State Law requires children to be immunized against diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, polio, measles, hepatitis B, and rubella before entering school.  An immunization audit is conducted each year by our school nurse.  Vision and hearing screenings are available at the request of the parent, guardian, or teacher.

The office staff handles illnesses and injuries that occur at school and notifies parents/guardians when necessary.  If a child has a temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, is vomiting, has a rash, or appears to be too ill to remain at school, the parent/guardian will be called to pick him/her up.  The office must have complete information regarding whom to call in case of an emergency.  If we are unable to reach a parent or guardian the parent’s designee well be contacted.
