Early Childhood
A Special Education Program
The Monona Grove School District’s Early Childhood Program provides preschool education for children age’s 3-6 years old in a public school setting. Beginning in the 2004-05 school year, the program will be held at CG School. To be eligible for the program, children must be evaluated through the special education process. Part of the process for determining eligibility is that children demonstrate significant delays in their development in two or more of the following areas:
1. Gross Motor - balance, walking, coordination, catching, throwing
2. Fine Motor - drawing, cutting, stacking blocks, stringing beads
3. Cognition - naming colors shapes, counting, naming pictures
4. Self-Help - dressing, buttoning, eating, bathrooming
5. Socialization - getting along with peers and adults, playing, behavior, attention span
To determine eligibility, certified staff will complete testing. Families will be actively involved throughout the testing.
Pre-Kindergarten Program
Pre-K is a pre-school program for four-year-olds that live in the Monona Grove School District. Like Early Childhood, the Pre-Kindergarten program is held at Cottage Grove School. The classes meet three hours a day four days a week. The program is designed to provide students with additional readiness experience before entering Kindergarten.
A child must be four years of age on or before September first of the school year. The program is designed to serve students the year before entering Kindergarten. Eligibility is also determined through information gathered at an Early Learning Fair held in the early spring of each year. Areas focused on are fine motor, gross motor, cognitive and language skills as well as social and emotional development.
