| Attendance Policy |
|
Each student should view his/her
opportunity to attend the Alternative School as a privilege.
Failure to attend classes will result in student’s removal.
Students are responsible to call themselves in when they will be absent.
Failure call in will result in a lunch detention. ¨ Students must call the Alternative School directly at 223-1895 in the morning to report that they will be absent that day. ¨ Each student is allowed only four absent days per quarter. Absences are not classified as excused or unexcused—absent means absent, whatever the reason. ¨ Students who exceed four absent days per quarter will be placed on contract and parents/guardians will be notified. A student who violates a contract is placed on a final contract; violation of final contract will result in student dismissal from the Alternative School. ¨ MGAS staff and advisory board will view all extenuating circumstances on an individual basis. |
| Tardy Policy |
|
Students are expected to arrive at school on time and return from break and lunch on time. However, the following policy will apply if students are tardy (0-20 minutes late). · Students are allowed 5 tardies per quarter with no penalty. ·
A sixth tardy ( and all subsequent tardies) will result in student
losing his/ her privilege of leaving the building during morning break.
Excessive tardies may lead to lunch detention. ·
Chronic tardies may result in student being removed from the
program.
|
| Work / Volunteer Policy |
| All students must work or volunteer in order to remain enrolled in the Alternative School. Students must work 90 hours each quarter in order to earn credit; 40 hours in order to maintain their good standing in the program. Upon entering the Alternative School or if between jobs, students will have a four week grace period in order to find a job / volunteer opportunity. After such time, a student must secure either a job or a volunteer position; failure to do so will result in the student’s removal from the program. |
| Post-Graduation Planning |
| The Alternative School awards credit on a pass/fail basis. This means students do not earn traditional letter grades, GPAs, or class ranks. For this reason, planning for a student’s path after high school is incredibly important as some four-year colleges require these statistics. Students, parents, and Alternative School teachers must work together to ensure that all possible doors are opened to students after they graduate from high school. |
|
Sensitive Issues |
| The curriculum of the Alternative School is intellectually rigorous and thought-provoking. It will address issues of concern that face our society today. Students in the Alternative School will be expected to discuss sensitive issues, watch controversial movies (some of which may be rated R), and read sensitive materials without restriction. |
